MAYA PATEL
Loughborough University
During my time at Loughborough university, I undertook Product Design Engineering with a year in industry where many projects were completed, helping me to improve and build may new skills.
Year 3 - Individual Project
Design and demonstrate SMART pliers for fitting hose clips at Toyota UK
Toyota UK use Pokayoke Pliers to detect the correct fitting of hose clips, but they are currently unreliable. They can mistakenly be used on the same hose clips more than once and sometimes a hose clip can be applied successfully but extra unnecessary force is required to be applied to the plier to trigger the detection mechanism, which causes strain on the engineers hands. This project aims to design and demonstrate a new set of pliers which do not have these issues and are more reliable.

Year 3

A product was selected as a group which could be produced using Additive Manufacturing as an alternative to its current manufacturing method

Brief: Two of the most important factors influencing survival are the early use of effective CPR and early defibrillation. Defibrillation is achieved using an automatic external defibrillator (AED). How do we get the patient, an AED, and someone to operate it co-located at the same time and place?

The task was to design and manufacture a household bottle using NX11 and create a CNC programme to manufacture a cavity, where the cavity is analysed using Vericut

This module taught the importance of sustainability throughout the whole lifecycle of the product from cradle to grave, where SimaPro Flow software was used to provide a comparative study of HDPE and Glass Milk Bottles supplied to a supermarket
Year 2

A system using NX was coded and inputted into a CNC machine and analysed

The brief was to produce “A device or technology which increases medical compliance for pill consumption, physical rehabilitation or any other prescribed course of treatment” as a group

As a group the ergonomics of a chosen vehicle was assessed allowing the vehicle to be modified to include features which would be suited to Golf

Tasked to individually design and manufacture a product that opens and closes using different mechanisms and imagination
Year 1

A crane was designed, manufactured and tested in order to lift a 40kg load onto a target

Part of the engine of the McLaren MP4-12C was disassembled and studied to analyse materials, and manufacturing processes

The CAD skills gained were used to analyse engineering drawings which were replicated using best practices and conforming to BS8888
